Hoptub Bath Machine CollaBREWation Debuts

Date: October 23, 2015

The Hangout Oyster Cook-Off & Craft Beer Weekend rolls onto the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama next weekend with samples of oyster dishes from over 60 restaurants. Cooking demos from such featured chefs as our fellow Atlantan, Wesley True of Ford Fry’s The Optimist, Alon Shaya (James Beard Best Chef South Award Winner, 2015), Ryan Prewitt (James Beard Best Chef South Award Winner, 2014) as well as Food Network stars Anne Burrell, Martie Duncan and Marc Murphy will help you sharpen your culinary skills.

In addition, 60 craft beers will be available from breweries such as Abita, Lagunitas, Terrapin, Back Forty, Black Warrior, and Goose Island. The highlight of the festival will be the specially created “Hoptub Bath Machine” which a collaborative effort from five breweries (all with Alabama roots): Oskar Blues (Brevard, NC), Straight to Ale (Huntsville, AL), Good People Brewing Co. (Birmingham, AL), Cahaba Brewing (Birmingham, AL), and Fairhope Brewing Company (Fairhope, AL).

In early September, Alabama-native Dale Katechis (founder of Oskar Blues Brewery,) invited his Southern brewing brethren to concoct a “collaBREWation” that would shine a light on the growth of Alabama craft brewing. “It’s great to dig in with the crew that is driving the craft beer scene back home in Alabama,” said Katechis. The light and crisp brew has a peppery, pear flavor with a citrusy finish. While the beer is set to debut just prior to The Hangout Oyster Cook-Off and Craft Beer Weekend, Hoptub Bath Machine will have very limited availability, and will make its official debut at the Friday Craft Beer Festival.

Dale Katechis brewed his first beer in a bathtub while studying at Auburn University. This brew eventually became the award-winning, Dale’s Pale Ale. This fall, he gave back to his alma mater with an endowed fellowship program for students accepted into the Brewing Sciences and Operations certificate program (this year’s scholarship recipient joined the collaborative brewing process in Brevard).
